Hyperpigmentation is darkened areas of the skin caused by an overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives human hair, skin and eyes their color, based on thousands of years of adapting to a certain geographic location. When someone has dark skin, this means that they have more melanin in their skin than light-skinned people.
There are three layers to our skin: the outer layer, or epidermis, the middle layer, the dermis and the inner layer, the hypodermis. It is in the outer layer, the epidermis that melanin is produced, creating specific color in the skin.
Our bodies produce melanin as a form of protection. Skin that is exposed to long-term UV rays will produce more melanin. A tan is actually nothing more than the skin attempting to protect itself. And a tan frequently causes damage that does not become evident until years after the damage was done, in the form of splotchy patches of hyperpigmentation we tend to refer to as age spots, sun spots or freckles. Other causes for overproduction of melanin can be trauma from burns, cuts and acne that heal over time, leaving behind post-inflammatory pigmentation. Hormonal fluctuations can also cause unwanted splotchy facial darkening, as is commonly seen with melasma, which is also known as the “pregnancy mask.”
Irritation and abrasion can cause hyperpigmentation, and it shows up predominantly in darker skinned men who shave their faces every day, thus irritating certain areas of the facial skin. And although hyperpigmentation is always a benign condition, it can look very unsightly and be worrisome to women and men suffering with it. And while makeup can cover some of it, there are lasting ways to reduce and remove the effects of too much melanin.
