Some individuals get acne as a teenager, and other people experience it as an adult. The face is not the only area affected by acne; it is also common on the back, shoulders and neck. No two experiences with acne are the same. As such, no two courses of treatment are the same. There are common elements that help all sufferers, however. 

Cleanse your skin twice daily when you suffer from acne: once in the morning and once at night. The night cleansing removes the toxins your pores soak up throughout the day, and the morning cleansing is necessary because as you sleep at night, your skin picks up any dust, skin particles or other debris on your pillow case and sheets. Choose a cleanser that includes tea tree oil, as this oil helps reduce inflammation and calms the skin.

After you cleanse your face, apply a high-quality moisturizer. Acne is not only caused by skin that is too oily; zits and pimples also sometimes occur when skin is too dry. When your skin is hydrated from the moisturizer, the redness of your acne is reduced.

As needed, apply spot acne serum. This serum reduces the size of your blemishes and promotes healing. The use of spot treatments also reduces the appearance of scarring after your acne fades. 

In combination with using a proper skin care routine to treat your acne, adjust your diet. Include plenty of healthy fruits and vegetables to boost your nutrient intake. Providing your body with the proper balance of vitamins and minerals improves the look of your skin and reduces acne. Drink plenty of water as well, as water hydrates your skin and reduces skin-related problems like acne.
