The summer is probably the season when people tend to have the most fun. Summer is when people like to go to their vacations, when schools and colleges take a break, and when people like to soak up the sun. We also tend to show more skin during the summer months than during the rest of the year, and the sun – well, from our point of view, is brighter and more intense than usual. That’s why people get sunburns, which are easily prevented by applying quality sunblock.
The first thing you need to know about quality sunblock is that it should provide broad spectrum protection. That means it should protect from both UVA and UVB rays. Although the UVB rays are the ones that cause the actual sunburn, UVA rays cause sunspots and play a role in premature ageing of the skin, and in development of skin cancer and dermatitis. So, you need protection from them as well.
The next thing you need to look for is a good sun protection factor, or SPF. SPF is a number that provides a relation between the time it would take for you to get a sunburn without any sunblock, and the amount of time it will take for it to happen once you apply the sunblock. So, if you can go for 10 minutes before getting a sunburn without a sunblock, with a SPF 30 sunblock, you can spend 300 minutes in the sun without getting a sunburn.
Now, for the ingredients – if your skin is prone to breakouts, allergies, or other reactions, try to get a chemical free sunblock. Also, it’s good idea to find one that’s labeled as non-comedogenic, which means it won’t clog your pores.
Other than this, remember that a sunblock is only effective while it’s covering your skin – and water and sweat can easily remove it without you even noticing, until it’s too late that is. That’s why a water resistant sunblock is better than one that’s not – it simply stays where it should for a longer time.
If you’re in the market for a new sunblock, following these advices will ensure you get a sunblock that will keep you protected. And if you already have a sunblock that doesn’t have all of the properties that were listed here, you should consider getting a new one.
